Water Pump Pressure Tank Troubleshooting
If your well turns on at 30 and off at 50 psi it should have 28 psi in it.
Water pump pressure tank troubleshooting. Step 2 attach a garden hose to the drain on the tank. Find the breaker for the pump and flip it if your pump does not have a power switch. More often water sediment clogs the sensor of a water pressure regulator or it may clog a water filter both of which lead to reduced water pressure and ultimately complete loss of water supply. Check the pressure tank s air valve unscrew the plastic cover from the air valve on the top of the tank.
Identify the bladder s air filling stem. Double check that power is running to your well and that there isn t a short. Here are a couple things to check. Add air if the pressure is more than 2 psi below the pump cut in pressure.
If the pump comes on in short and frequent operation the rubber bladder may be the cause. Once all the water is gone the pressure should be 2psi less than cut in pressure or the pressure for when the pump turns on. Disconnect electricity to the pump then drain all the water out of the pressure tank by opening a faucet. Determine how your tank s pressure cycle has been set up tanks and well pumps are set up using a high and a low setting.
When water in the home is being used and the tank s pressure water supply reaches the low setting the tank has become empty. Check the water pump breaker in your electrical box to make sure the breaker hasn t tripped. Check the well tank pressure gauge to see if it is at least 40. Check the pressure in the water tank.
They usually run on a 30 50 psi cycle or a 40 60 psi cycle. Remove all power to the pump motor and drain the water from the system. Using a tire pressure gauge check the schrader valve on top of the pressure tank. It should be 2 psi less than the cut in or lower pressure.
When water pulses at the spigot it usually means you have a waterlogged tank. Disconnect electrical power to the pump. Turn off power to the well pump and run water after the pressure tank or in the house until there is no water pressure left. If it has tripped you will.
The rubber bladder in the pressure tank could be ruptured or empty of air if the pump is erratic in operation. Use a small screwdriver to depress the air valve to see if water comes out. Drain the tank by opening the closest faucet. Use caution when using an air compressor or air pump.
