Water Pressure Tank Psi Too High
When the pressure approaches the cycle on psi usually around 40 psi the pump kicks on to refill the tank with water and restore water pressure.
Water pressure tank psi too high. Residential water pressure tends to range between 45 and 80 psi pounds per square inch. That way there is always a small amount of water pressure in the system. If there is frequent or rapid cycling the bladder in the pressure tank could be damaged. Some national and regional plumbing codes require that the maximum static water pressure should be not more than 80 psi 5 5 bar.
Anything below 40 psi is considered low and anything below 30 psi is considered too low. The expansion tank needed to keep your temperature pressure relief valve from opening unnecessarily. Such an event can both flood the building and can injure anyone nearby. Anything over 80 psi and you re in the danger zone.
The minimum pressure required by most codes is 20 psi. The ideal pressure for the health of your plumbing system and appliances is between 40 and 60 psi and building codes in most areas specify that water pressure be under 80. You will need to check your tank but most pressure tanks are good to 100 or 125 psi the ones in the upper chart are only 75 though so that s probably not the limiting factor. For example if you set the pump to come on when the pressure falls to 30 psi the air pressure in the tank should be 28 psi.
The pressure switch can often be adjusted to accommodate this higher pressure assuming the well pump and well can operate without difficulty at the higher pressure. Give it a few seconds and take a look at the gauge. It s usually about 30 psi but optimally the air pressure should be 2 psi lower than the cut in pressure you set for the pump. Ideally you want your water pressure to be between 40 and 60 psi.
Pressures above 80 psi are too high. For very high water pressure readings in your system. If yours measures over 80 psi on the gauge it is definitely time to lower the pressure. What to look for.
You ll need to check what the pressure on your hot water heater s temperature pressure valve is but it s probably also fine. If the water pressure is over 70 or 80 psi your system there can be a risk of burst water pipiong or a burst water pressure tank. As we explain in more detail at water pressure reducer regulator often municipal water supply pressure can run quite high say over 80 psi and in some communities more than 150 psi. On systems that are closed or have high water pressure the tprv will leak when the wh turns on.
Attach the pressure gauge to the faucet make sure it s on tight and turn the water all the way on.
