Water Pressure Tank Bladder Psi
The pressure in the pressure tank should be 2 psi less than the cut in pressure for the pump.
Water pressure tank bladder psi. In a bladder type water tank with proper pressure adjustment when all water has left the tank you ll see air pressure at 2 psi below the pressure switch cut in setting. If you are using a 30 50 pressure switch the pressure will continue to drop down until it reaches 30psi. With no water in the pressure tank the internal bladder type water tank is typically set to an air pressure of 2 psi below the pressure control switch cut in pressure. Use caution when using an air compressor or air pump.
Procedure for setting well bladder pressure every pressure tank has an air valve similar to the one on a car or bicycle tire. As water comes out of the tank the pressure of the tank decreases. Drawdown is the amount of stored water available in the pressure tank between the pump turning on and off. For example if you have a pressure switch setting of 30 50 psi you pressure measured at the top of the tank should read 28 psi.
Release or add air as necessary to make the pressure 2 psi below the pressure switch pump cut in setting. Air can be added with a compressor or bicycle pump. Troubleshooting pressure tank issues. If there is frequent or rapid cycling the bladder in the pressure tank could be damaged.
What to look for. A pressure control switch usually mounted on or near the water tank senses the pressure drop and at a pre set pump cut in pressure typically 20 or 30 psi the pressure switch turns on the water pump. This pressure represents the tank empty of any water as when there is water within the tank the pressure will increase. The cut on pressure for the well pump is 30 psi so the pressure of the tank should have a pressure of 28 psi.
Even if the tank air pressure is too low you should still see some air pressure at the tank air valve when all water has left the tank. Disconnect electrical power to the pump. If it appears that a bladder tank is not operating correctly check the tank s air charge. Check the tank s pressure by placing an air pressure gauge on the air charging valve on the top of the tank.
Add air if the pressure is more than 2 psi below the pump cut in pressure. See water pump pressure control adjustment for details of this control. If your well tank is on a 40 60 pressure switch your pressure setting should be 38 psi. So if your pressure control is a 30 50 model your tank precharge is 28 psi.
For bladder tanks drain the water pressure by turning off the power and opening the drain faucet of the tank. Check the pressure using a tire gauge once the water has been drained and adjust to approximately 30 psi if possible then re activate the system and flush until the water is clear. Check pressure in the tank with your pressure gauge.
